The two deceased peacekeepers are believed to be Egyptians.

Describing the incident,

The vehicles had stopped while traveling from Tessalit to Gao on Saturday when unidentified gunmen opened fire, the statement described.

The UN troops “retaliated firmly and sent the assailants fleeing”, the statement said.

The head of UN force Minusma, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, said every effort would be made to apprehend those behind it.

Thirty-one were killed when gunmen attacked a village in central Mali, burning houses, crops, and livestock recently.
