Bono Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC has suggested that it would be necessary for the President to lower the ranks of all security officers responsible for fighting illegal mining.
According to him, security officers assigned to fight galamsey should be sanctioned since they failed to accomplish their goals.
“We tasked this security personnel with protecting our forest reserves and water bodies. What we have to do now is to put the KPIs on the board and check if they have achieved their targets. If the water bodies have not regained their natural colourless state, then we reduce their ranks,” he said.
He asserted that it will serve as a warning to those who could be tempted to use their country’s goodwill on a mission for their own financial gain.
Abronye couldn’t understand how there could be mercury in the nation if illicit mining was being combated.
“There is a fight against galamsey but there is an abundance of mercury and the mercury does not come from rain, it is imported so if we can fight galamsey, we need to ensure that mercury does not enter this country. If we allow mercury in the country, then the fight will fail,” he said on Accra-based Neat FM.
