Veteran football administrator, Jonathan Abbey Pobee has descended heavily on Ghanaian football legend Michael Essien for declaring his support for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) group in Ghana.
Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Angel FM, Mr. Pobee in Ga local dialect hurled insults on the footballer for supporting such an evil act.
The former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien became the first football star in the country to openly declare support for the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) group in Ghana.
Essien in a social media post assured the group of his support and urged to continue fighting for their rights.
“We see you, we hear you, we support you. Our LGBTIA community in Ghana,” a post on the Black Stars legend reads.
The post was however deleted after it attracted backlash from some Ghanaians on the platform.
Mr. Pobee in his reaction said that the Ghana Football Association(GFA) through the Sports Writers Association of Ghana(SWAG) should write to FIFA and sanction Michael Essien for breaking FIFA rules in football that ban players from making certain utterances.
