On April 7th, 2023, six individuals were arrested by the police for assaulting an officer at the Wono Akotsosu snap checkpoint in the Kumawu district of the Ashanti Region.
According to investigations, the suspects – Edward Boateng, Evans Addo, Yaw Kusi, Michael Owusu, Yaw Boateng, and Emmanuel Mensah – along with another individual who is currently at large, were traveling in a taxi cab that was overloaded with seven male adults. One of the three police officers on duty at the checkpoint noticed the suspicious vehicle and attempted to conduct a search.
However, the suspects resisted the officer’s efforts and violently attacked him in an attempt to prevent the search. Some reports suggest that the altercation was sparked by a dispute over bush meat that the officer allegedly tried to take from the suspects.
Following the incident, a team of police reinforcements arrived at the scene and managed to apprehend six of the suspects. The injured police officer and one of the suspects, who was also injured during the altercation, were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the two other police officers who were on duty with the attacked officer – No. 58741 G/Constable Isaac Boiatey and No.61963 G/Constable Evans Owusu – have been suspended from duty for allegedly failing to rescue their colleague, subdue the attackers, and make arrests.
