Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram constituency, Samuel Nartey George says he has been accused of money laundering for championing the anti-gay bill.
According to the outspoken lawmaker, he cannot change a dollar to other foreign currencies whenever he travels abroad. Mr. George made this known while speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.
“As we speak now, I can’t change $1 everywhere in the world. They have put me on money laundering list. They claim I’m laundering money for Evangelical Conservatives in the US,” he said.
The legislator revealed that anytime he is traveling, he has to change the foreign currency from Ghana or beg someone abroad to do it for him.
Sam George is one of the lawmakers fighting for the passage of the anti-gay bill. The anti-LGBTQ bill, titled “The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021,” seeks to further restrict the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana.
If passed, it would criminalize the defense of LGBTQ+ rights, impose harsher prison sentences for homosexuality, require the reporting of “suspects,” and promote conversion therapy. The bill has caused a major public debate over its appropriateness.
