Ghanaian comedienne and media personality, Valentina Nana Ekua well known as Afia Schwarzenegger says the name given to movies made in Ghanaian local dialect “Kumawood” was first initiated by her.
The mother of three speaking in an interview on Neat FM with Ola Michael monitored by Adepanews.com on Friday October 2, 2020 narrated how she came up with the name Kumawood.
According to the Former Okay FM presenter, she had a discussion with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kumawood Multimedia, Samuel Darko on how to organize movie awards, it was there the name Kumawood popped up and they organized the Kumawood Akoben Movie Awards.
Several actors in the local movie industry which is mostly called Kumawood have talked against the name because they believe it is for a company so should not be used for the entire industry.
Top actors in the industry like Bill Asamoah, Nana Ama McBrown, Emelia Brobbey and many others have asked Ghanaians especially the media to stop tagging movies made in the local dialect as Kumawood Movies but Samuel Darko, CEO of Kumawood Multimedia, oganisers of the annual Kumawood and Akoben Movie Awards has asked moviemakers to accept the name and focus on other pressing issues affecting the industry instead of focusing on the name.
