Ghana’s Information Minister, Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said that the government is set to provide security for independent candidates believed can easily be attacked ahead of the upcoming general.
It said it intelligence shows that some unknown persons have plan to attack these independent presidential candidates and lay blames on the ruling government for creating insecurity in the country.
The Ofoase/Ayirebi MP speaking in an interview on Joy News disclosed that the government has engaged independent candidates as well as provide extra security for them.
“They are being provided with some police officers to ensure that they are secured in forestalling any such attacks on them,” he added.
Meanwhile, the government had deployed 200 police personnel to protect parliamentarians in the country. The officers are to operate under the Parliamentary Protection Unit, said the Interior Minister Ambrose Dery.
The Interior Minister on Tuesday October 12, 2020 appeared before parliament after he was summoned following the killing of late Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford. He revealed to the House the new arrangement that every MP will be entitled to a police officer as a bodyguard.
