Member of Parliament for Asawase constituency and minority Chief Whip, Hon Muntaka Mubarak has sent a stern warning to embassies who have vowed to deny MPs visas to their countries for throwing support behind the LGBTQ+ bill.
This comes after reports circulated that some lawmakers who are sponsoring the anti-g@y bill in parliament have been denied visas to travel overseas.
Hon. Muntaka speaking in an interview clearly stated that no legislator will bow to any pressure from the embassies as far as it is not a crime for an MP to express their views on national issues in Parliament.
“..it’s against the constitution of Ghana for any member of parliament to be punished for expressing his or her opinion on national issues in the house of parliament. So, therefore, no embassy can punish any MP in this country to kowtow to their wish,” he said.
Hon. Muntaka added that they will demonstrate against any Embassy that refuses lawmakers Visa till is closed down by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
According to him, a similar sanction will also be passed if the embassies attempt to threaten MPs by denying them Visas to their countries because of their stance on the LGBTQ+ bill.
