President Akufo-Addo has directed the Minister for Lands and Natural, Samuel Abu Jinapor to pay $5 million of Maxam’s $6 million fine into the Appiatse Support fund.
This was made known in a statement released by the Lands Ministry on Thursday, February 10, 2022.
“The President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has directed that Five Million United States Dollars (US$5,000,000.00), out of the total of Six Million United States Dollars (US$6,000,000.00), to be paid by Maxam Ghana Limited to Government, be donated to the Appiatse Support Fund, established by Government to, among others, support the victims of the Appiatse incident and reconstruct the community,” part of the release signed by Minister Abu Jinapor reads.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources fined Maxam Ghana Limited US$6 million for breach of regulation on manufacture, storage and transportation of explosives.
The Minister in an earlier statement noted that per L.I 2177 of the Minerals and Mining (Explosives) Regulations 2012 which governs the activities of explosives dealers, every breach attracts fines ranging from GH₵600 to US$10,000.
“Maxam shall pay the fine of one million United States dollars (US$1,000,000.00) or its cedi equivalent at the prevailing commercial rate before the restoration of its permit to manufacture, store, supply and/or transport explosives,” the statement said.
